Cutters Finish Second in Group IV State Competition with Overall Effect, Visual and Percussion Awards

FAIR LAWN, N.J., Nov. 7, 2011 - The Fair Lawn High School Marching Band is preparing for the final event of its competitive season – U.S. Scholastic Band Association (USSBA) National Competition on Nov. 12.  The band took a close second in Group IV at the USSBA State competition held on Nov. 5 in Old Bridge, N.J. The Cutters also received Group IV caption awards in Overall Effect, Visual and Percussion.

The Cutters’ regular season record included a total of four first place finishes including a sweep at the Central Jersey Regional; five all-classes caption awards for best music and percussion; and all Group IV caption awards in four of its six events. The Cutters’ percussion won six caption awards and best overall in two shows including the annual Garden State Gold Marching Band competition among 21 competing ensembles from New Jersey.

Cutters Will Be the Only Bergen County Band performing at Open Class Nationals

The Fair Lawn Cutter band is rehearsing all week for its final USSBA championship event: the Nov. 12th National Championship Open Class in Annapolis, Md.

The Cutters Marching Band competes in the largest marching band circuit in the country, the USSBA. Since the inception of the USSBA National Championships format in 2006, Fair Lawn has been the only school to represent Bergen County as an Open Class band. Last season, the band placed eighth overall and first in percussion in the prestigious event in Annapolis at the Army/Navy stadium.

This year’s show, entitled ‘Bound,’ is written in three movements and reflects the themes of physical bonds, emotional bonds and common bonds. During the past decade, the Fair Lawn High School Marching Band has achieved 10 consecutive national Top 13 finishes along with six straight invitations to the U.S. National Marching Band Championships.

Recognized as one of Fair Lawn High School's most outstanding opportunities for students, the group also is a six-time USSBA national or group champion in percussion and also a National Bronze Medalist as a band at the first-ever USSBA championship in 2006 and the Group II Class A champion in 2002.
