FL Friends of Music Meeting

The meeting was called to order @ 7:35

Kathy introduced the members of the board

Ms. Lucas was not present

Mr. Kafers Report- This has been a great start to the year for symphonic band.

Wind ensemble- The kids are super he is really enjoying them.

Jazz ensemble auditions are late October.

Pit Orchestra auditions are the second or third week in December

Changes in the football schedule this year were made late in the season, and he was not told until last minute so we have missed and will miss some away games. He also said it would be difficult for both bands to perform full shows since half-time was shortened.

            Our first competition of the year is Sat. Sept. 29th in Piscataway. There will be eight band competing.

            FOM has about $3500.00 to gift to the music dept this year.  Mr. Kafer presented his suggestions: 1. software and music writing program upgrade costing about $ 2000.00

2. A shed for equipment to be used only by the music dept. costing about $ 1500.00 He said he could probably get the district to pay for the cement slab.

3. A flatbed trailer to transport the tympanis

4. Various instrument and repair kits are always needed

 

Kathy informs us that we will vote on how to spend the money in October according to our By-laws.

Treasurer Report – Larry Comella has stepped down and the board has appointed Steve Gordon, who nicely volunteered, to take over for the year, if no one else is interested? Kathy made a proposal to accept Steve as Treasurer and Merryl Ehrich Second it, everyone was in favor, and Steve is now treasurer.

            This year’s budget has some fundraisers eliminated that didn’t make much profit and we have added some new ones and profit is estimated for $ 3900.00 this year. George Vasquez made a motion to accept the proposed budget for 2007/2008 and Gary Ehrich Second it the budget was approved.

Scholarship requirements- Meryl Gordon- You must be a paid member of FOM for each year your child is in the program and your child must tag twice a year for three consecutive years that they are in the program.  The only exceptions are that of a transfer student.

Handbook and Bylaws- Colleen Meitzler- the book covering the bylaws is available online on the website.  This year membership dues are $20.00.

Correspondence- Gayle Menist- She has thank you notes for the scholarships that were given out last year, left at home. Gayle thanked everyone for their support for the band dinner.

Membership -Merry Ehrich- about 57 families are paid up. Dues must be paid for by check.

Publicity- Russ Mensch-off to a good start hope to have a published story every week, please visit the website. Jackets will be in Friday. If you take good pictures please send them to me to send to the newspaper.

Marketing- Joaquin Echevarria-TCBY and Dunkin Donuts on Broadway will donate 20 percent of the saved receipts back to us, so save your receipt.  Friendly will also be having a family night to donate back to us he will let us now when. Dominos will discount your order 25% on your pickup order if you mention FOM.

He is getting a number of sponsors from local merchants.  We have had donations from Costco and BJs.  Please check the sponsor page on the website and support our sponsors and let them know you are from FOM.

New Website-Gary Ehrich-a lot of changes going on and it should be easier to navigate

We have a wider reach for our e-mails including everyone in the music program.  We will be sending out a lot more e-mails this year.

Roadies- Doug Moser/Jim Agnew-Doug thanked everyone for there previous help and asked for help for the Thursday 3pm game. We have a competition and game the end of the month need about 8 volunteers needed per event. Doug and Jim were asked about the trailer Mr. Kafer has on his wish list and they don’t feel it is really necessary.  They will continue to investigate.  They are willing to take part-time help for roadies also.

Fundraisers- Kathy explained about the change in fundraisers.  We are in need of Chair people.

Bake Sale- Dawn has volunteered to work this Wed sale and we have an Alumni, Cheryl Grossel who has volunteered to work the bake sale, but we still need a chair person.  Please bring your baked good up to Guidance.

Giants Raffle- Need a chair person to handle this we have a short window for this fundraiser. JoAnne LeGrand has volunteered to take over.

FOM Table- Three home games need someone to man the table.  Sell Honey, Chocolate Lollypops, Raffles, and Hand out Pamphlets, need people through half-time.

Eco Phones & Ink Cartridges – need someone to collect and send in.  They will also be collecting DVDs. Info will be put on website.

Clothing Drive- Oct 27th save old clothing.

Tag Day- Winter and Spring- Liz Fanning and Janet Collins vol. to chair the winter Tag day

We need Chair people for all these events.

The floor was opened for discussion on how to spend the gift money.  Any questions will be brought back to Mr. Kafer.  What classes will use the software? Mr. Kafer previously mentioned sound shells, is he still interested? Where will the shed be placed? Russ said they would work on a donation for the shed. And Joaquin said he will work on donation of instrument repair kits. Kathy said we will vote on this in October. The meeting was adjourned.
